Free Climbing
With aid climbing, the rope and a variety of aids, all the way up to ladders, are used to help move the body. This type of climbing began during the years after the 1st World War, reached its peak during the sixties and remained very popular into the 1970s and 1980s.
With free climbing, only the rock and the climbers own body can be used to move. Ropes and technical aids are only there for safety should you fall (the term therefore does not constitute climbing without safety provisions). This type of climbing appeared in the 1970s and 1980s as a backlash to aid climbing and is the most popular form of climbing today.
The wonderful climbing parks which can be found over the entire Ötztal offer the chance to return to the various different types of climbing.
